Sri Bhagavan Nama Bodhendra Saraswati Swamigal

Purushothaman was born in Kanchipuram to pious parents and even as a child, was given in service to the then pontiff of Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt.  He had great love towards his Guru and served him with all faith and sincerity. Later his Guru gave him the sanyasa name of Sri Bhagavan Nama Bodhendra Saraswati Swamigal.

Sri Bodhendra travelled to various villages spreading the greatness of Rama nama (Taraka mantra). Once He went to a village called Perambur near Raja Mannargudi. There he was invited by a couple to their house for bhiksha (partaking food). He initiated them with ‘Rama’ nama and then agreed to visit their house. All arrangements were made in the house for the arrival of Swamiji. The host had a 5 year old son who was deaf and dumb since birth. Since all the householders were busy carefully preparing for Swamiji’s arrival, the child was not fed anything since the morning. He was starving.

The tAraka nAmA, rAmA

The derivation of words from their root syllables each of which is the root of a verb signifying an action, is, in the Sanskrit language a very instructive excercise. Hindu religious literature is replete with such derivations for almost every word that it uses. Each of the names of God like Rama, Krishna, Siva , Narayana, etc. -- in fact, each one of the names of God in the various lists of thousand names of God (sahasra-naamaa) has been assigned several derivations from their root syllables. 'The one in whose memory yogis revel in the bliss of brahman' -- is the meaning of the word Rama. "'ramante yogino-nante brahmaanande chidaatmani' -- is the declaration in the Padma-purana. 'ramante' (they revel, enjoy) is the action which forms the root verb for 'Rama'. The greatness of the word 'Rama' is not just because what the son of Dasaratha did what he did. Preceptor Vasishta hit upon the name for the child of Dasaratha because he knew that it was already a 'taaraka-mantra' -- that is, the mantra which takes you across the ocean of samsaara.

Sri Bhagavan Nama Bodhendra Swamigal was a 17th century saint poet and the 59th ‘Jagathguru’ of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. A scholar in Sanskrit, he was a great devotee of Lord Rama. His contribution enriched the devotional and musical culture of the Cauvery delta during the Nayak and Maratha periods. His original name was Purushothaman, which was christened by Viswathikendra Saraswathy (known as Athmabodhar), who was the 58th ‘Jagathguru’ of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. On justifying the efficacy of the ‘Rama Nama’, he came to be known as ‘Bhagavan Nama Bodhendra’. 

ஸ்ரீ ராம நாம மஹிமை

ராம நாம சிறப்பு எத்தன்மையது பாருங்கள்: முக்யமான சில பீஜாக்ஷரங்கள் வருமாறு:

(भूः பூ: भुवः புவ: सुवः :ஸுவ:) காயத்ரீ, ऐं ஐம் சரஸ்வதி, दुं தும் துர்கா, क्लीं க்லீம் காளிகா, श्री ச்ரீ லக்ஷ்மி, हौं ஹௌம் சிவன், गं கம் கணபதி. பீஜாக்ஷரங்களின்றி மந்திரங்கள் பயன்படாது. முச்சுடர்களின் பீஜாக்ஷரமும் ஒன்று சேர்ந்தது ராமநாமம். மும்மூர்த்திகளின் ஸ்வரூபமும் ராமநாமமே. ராமநாமம் பிரம்மா விஷ்ணு சிவஸ்வரூபமாக இருக்கிறது. அக்னி சிவஸ்வரூபம், சூர்யன் நாராயணஸ்வரூபம்; " सवित्रु मंडल मध्यवर्ती नारायण सरसिजासन" (ஸவித்ரு மண்டல மத்யவர்த்தீ நாராயண ஸரஸிஜாஸன) சூர்ய மண்டலத்தின் மத்யபாகத்தில் நாராயணன் இருக்கிறார். சந்திரன் பிரம்மஸ்வரூபம் (அத்ரிமகரிஷியின் மனைவி அனசூயாவிற்கு மும்மூர்த்திகளும் குழந்தைகளாக ஆனார்கள்; துர்வாசர் ருத்ராம்சமும், மஹாவிஷ்ணு தத்தாத்ரேயராகவும், பிரம்மா ஆத்ரேயனாகவும் ஆனார்கள்).

ராம ஜபம் RAMA JAPAM

ராமா என்ற சொல்லில் 'ரா' என்ற எழுத்து ஆன்ம ஸ்வரூபத்தை குறிக்கிறது. 'மா' என்ற எழுத்து 'நான்' என்ற ஆணவத்தைக் குறிக்கிறது. ஒருவர் 'ராமா' என்று இடைவிடாது ஜபித்துக் கொண்டேயிருந்தால் 'மா' என்ற எழுத்து 'ரா' என்ற எழுத்தில் ஐக்கியமாகி மறைந்து விடுகிறது. 'ரா' என்ற ஸ்வரூபமே எஞ்சி நிற்கிறது. இந்நிலை ஏற்படும்போது தியானம் செய்யும் முயற்சியும் ஓய்ந்து போய் நமது உண்மை நிலையாம் நிரந்தர தியானம் நிலைத்து விடுகிறது.

In the word RAMA, 'Ra' denotes aatma swaroopam and 'Ma' denotes ego. If one does continous japa of 'Ra Ma', the letter 'Ma' merge in the letter 'Ra' and only the 'Ra' swaroopam remains. When this happens, the effort to do meditation subsides and the true meditation materialize for ever.

ராம நாமா

"நாம் எதை நினைக்கிறோமோ அவை அனைத்தும் நடைபெறுவதில்லை.  அப்படி நாம் நினைத்தபடி நடைபெறாத சமயத்தில், 'பகவத் சங்கல்பம்போல் நடைபெறுகிறது' எனக் கூறுகிறோம்.  அழிவையுடைய நாம் நினைக்கும் எண்ணங்களும் காரியங்களும் அதன் மூலம் ஏற்படும் சுகங்களும் அழிவை உடையவை.  ஆகையால்தான் நாம் நினைத்தபடி நடக்கிறதில்லை.  நாம் என்ன நினைக்கிறோம்?  எப்போதும் சந்தோஷமாய் இருக்க வேண்டும் என நினைக்கிறோம்.  ஆனால் எப்போதும் நாம் சௌக்யமாய் இருக்க முடிவதில்லை.  ஆனால் அழிவில்லாத பகவானை நாம் நினைத்தால் நாமும் அழிவில்லாதவர்களாக ஆகிவிடுவோம்.  இவ்விதம் அழிவில்லாத தன்மையை அடைவதற்கும் எப்போதும் சந்தோஷமாய் இருப்பதற்கும் பகவானான ஸ்ரீ ராமச்சந்திரமூர்த்தியும் அவன் நாமாவான ராம நாமாவுமே முக்ய சாதனம்.  'ரமயதீதி  ராம:' என்பதனால் அனைவரையும் சந்தோஷப்படுத்துபவன் தானும் சந்தோஷமாகத்தான் இருப்பான்.  ஆகையால் தானும் சந்தோஷமாய் இருந்துகொண்டு அனைவரையும் சந்தோஷப்படுத்துபவன் ராமன்.  எல்லோரும் அழிவில்லாத ஸ்வரூபமான ராமனையும் அவன் நாமாவையும் நினைத்து, சொல்லி அழிவில்லாத ஆனந்தத்தை அடைவோம்."
