Narayaneeyam - Dasakam: 22 (Salvation of Ajaamila)

SALVATION OF AJAAMILA

Long ago, there lived a Brahmin by name Ajamila, who followed the path of virtue, leading the life of a householder. He went to the forest at the command of his father. There he met a woman of immodest appearance and undesirable character, in a drunken state. Though by nature a man of self control his mind was attracted to her. He gave up all his duties and revelling in her company led a sinful life. As he became old, he became very much attached to his son who bore Thy name – Naaraayanaby turns he was eighty-eight years old and was now on his deathbed. The messengers of Yama, , the god of death ,appeared with fearful countenances with ropes inhand . They were wresting the soul from his heart when Ajamilain a quavering voice called for his youngest son who was named Narayana. “O! Narayana! Narayana!” Then a miracle happened!

28 (Abhirami Andhadhi - Verse 28)

EXPERIENCE WORLDLY PLEASURES AND ETERNAL BLISS

Sollum porulum ena, nadam aadum thunaivarudan
pullum parimalap poongodiye! nin pudhumalarth thaal
allum pagalum thozhumavarkke azhiyaa arasum
sellum thavanneriyum, sivalogamum siththikkume.

Abhirami! You dance gracefully with Nataraja similar to the dancing of choice epithets with their meanings and you are effervescent-tender creeper. The fortune of being kings, divine righteous path, the kingdom of Lord Shiva and all these will be bestowed on those devotees who fix in their minds your fresh-flower-feet night and day.

Shri Thyagabrahmam "On whose art no human hand can improve"

Saint Shri Thyagaraja's Samadhi, Thiruvaiyaru, TN.

The life and work of Thyagaraja, the bard of Thiruvayyaru, is a miracle of miracles. For no musician, with exception of Purandaradasa, revolutionized and gave direction to Indian music as he did. So creative a musician and saint was he that he has come to be known as Sri Thyaga Brahmam, which is a reference not only to his creativity but carries with it a part of his father's name, Ramabrahmam.

The bulwark of a great culture, the Vijayanagara Empire, with all its glory, fell at the end of the 16th century. The invasion from the North brought in its wake new, though not always commendable, trends in living. Quite a few Hindu families had to flee to Southern areas which were still peaceful. Many found shelter under the benign rule of the Nayakas and the Maratha kings of Tamilnadu.

27 (Abhirami Andhadhi - Verse 27)

Grand beauty Abhirami! You have severed my birth, death cycles. You have also placed that strong affection in my heart. You have ordained me to bow down my head to your Lotus- feet. You have cleansed my mind of all impure thoughts. I can't describe with words your grace.

Soundarya Lahari - An Introduction

Bliss is the source of all created beings. Bliss here and beyond is one object universally desired by all creatures. The pleasures experienced by the physical senses of Man are transient and mingled with suffering. Unalloyed and ever-lasting bliss could be experienced only when man gets release from the cycle of births and deaths. This release could be obtained only through a clear and comprehensive knowledge of God, soul and matter. Such knowledge is beyond the view of human physical senses and could be had only from omniscient Veda, the repository of the transcendental wisdom revealed to the pure saintly souls who meditated deep and long to discover the Supreme Truth. The knowledge of the Atman and Brahman could be obtained only study under a teacher, enquiry and cogitation, and intensive meditation on the self as not different from Brahman as elucidated in the scriptures. Meditation on an attributeless all-pervasive Brahman is possible for highly evolved souls who have reached an advanced stage of spiritual progress, through self-control, devotion and divine grace. For the benefit of the less advanced spiritual seekers, the benign Veda has also presented the Brahman with attributes or qualities with a name and form for easy mental comprehension and contemplation.

Guruvayur Ekadasi

Guruvayur Ekadasi is also observed as the Prathishta Dinam (installation day) of the temple. Though the temple is known as Sri Krishna temple, the idol made of Pathalanjana Sila, installed at the Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum), is of Lord Mahavishnu. Guruvayur became divine on account of the "tapas" performed by Lord Siva for years under the waters and later by the Prechethas (the ten sons of Pracheenabarhis and Suvarna are together called Prechethas) in the Rudratheertham - the sacred tank on the northern side of the present temple - where Lord Guruvayurappan has His Arattu (holy bath on the last day of Annual Utsavam). Prechethas (the ten sons of Pracheenabarhis and Suvarna) came to this place to do tapas to attain "prajapathithwam" (king of all kings) from Lord Mahavishnu. Sensing the motive of Prechethas, Lord Siva emerged out of the Rudratheertham and revealed to them the "Rudrageetham", a hymn in praise of Mahavishnu. Siva suggested them to chant it with all their heart to get their wishes fulfilled. The Princes won the favour of Mahavishnu after rigorous tapas for 10,000 years under the waters of Rudratheertham chanting Rudrageetham.

THE PRTHU EPISODE

The Story Of Venan and Avatar Of Prthu

After the passing of such a heroic soul like Dhruva, there appeared on thescene, Venan the personification of senseless wickedness. Born in the same line of illustrious kings Venan was the son of king Anga and queen Sumitha. Even as a child, his evil nature showed up. As he grew up his wickedness also grew. Festivals of Karthikai

Maha Bharani Dheepam, Thiruvannamalai

The auspicious and celebrated Karthigai Maasam begins this year on November 17th and ends on December 16th. It is the eight month in the tamil year and derives its name from the Nakshatram or constellation of Krithika or Pleiades. Lord Shiva is the presiding deity of this month and Shiva temples all over India are crowded with devotees practicing vows and oblations to honour and propitiate Him. In Tamil Nadu, there is an ancient religious custom which is still followed, that of waking up before dawn and serenading the Lord with melodious chants from the Tiruvempavai, a collection of devotional hymns praising Lord Shiva and bidding him to awaken and glorify the universe with his Light. Moreover, Ayyappa devotees start the 41-day Ayyappa Deeksha Vrittam and make the annual pilgrimage to Sabarimala during this month.

23 (Abhirami Andhadhi - Verse 23)

TO REMAIN HAPPY FOREVER

Kollen, manaththil nin kolam allaadhu; anbar koottandhannai

Abhirami! I will not fill my mind with any other thing than with your vision. Besides I will not part company with your devotees. Neither I will like the other faiths and you are present in the inside and outside of all the three worlds. You are so sweet like honey and ecstatic , so dear as the pupil of my eye, and so good as to help this simpleton.

Krishna Dwadasa Manjari

Shri Hari Hara

While Sridhara Ayyawal was staying in Trichy, some greedy neighbours voiced their opinion to the King that Ayyawal was more leaning towards Lord Shiva than Lord Vishnu and he should be put to test. The King who was a great devotee of Ayyaval did not like the idea of testing the saint. However the desire to know the heart of the saint sprouted in him and hence he decided to test Ayyaval without malice and hit upon a plan.

He ordered the priests to dress up Sri Mathrubhuteshwara Lord Shiva in Tiruchirapalli as Lord Krishna and take him in procession. He thought that Sridhara Ayyaval’s reaction would indicate his bias. When the procession passed through the home of Ayyaval he was meditating on Lord Shiva. Upon hearing that the procession is nearing his house he came out to see the Lord and found Mathrubuteshwara in the form of Krishna.

Upon seeing this Ayyaval spontaneously poured out and started praising Lord Krishna through his divine composition known as “Krishna Dwadasa Manjari comprising of twelve verses and in one of the verse he asks , “Oh! Lord Krishna! When will I spend every moment of my life in meditating on your Lotus Feet by reminding myself of the transitory nature of this world, being humble, knowing my deficiencies, turning blind to other’s faults, being compassionate towards all living beings, being a servant of the devotees of the Lord and eyeing both joy and sorrow alike?”

The King was taken aback on this and all his greedy neighbours fell at the feet of Sridhara Ayyaval and apologized for their ignorance. The King then requested Ayyaval to stay back in Trichy. However Ayyaval politely declinded the offer as that will stop his mission of spreading the divine message to the world.

22 (Abhirami Andhadhi - Verse 22)

TO BREAK FREE FROM THE CYCLE OF DEATH - REBIRTH

Kodiye, ilavansik kombe, enakku vambe pazhuththa

Abhirami! You are a slender creeper. You are tender Vanji Creeper. You are the fruit, I havc got, even before I deserve it. You are the female elephant born in the snow covered Himalayan Mountains. You are the benign mother begotten Brahma and other demi-gods. I am your servant and save me from Birh death cycles.

Narayaneeyam - Dasakam: 16 (Incarnation of Nara & Narayana)

INCARNATION OF NARA & NARAYANA

THE DIVINE TWINS - "NARA & NARAYANA"

We have seen earlier one of the daughters of Swayambhuva Manu. She was Devahuti, mother of Kapila. Yet another daughter of Swayambhuva Manu was PRASUTI. She was married to the son of Brahma-DAKSHA PRAJAPATI.Daksha and Prasuti had 16 daughters. Out of these 16, thirteen were married to DHARMA DEVA. One was married to PITRUS; one to AGNI and another named SATI was married to SIVA.

Out of the thirteen married to Dharmadeva ,one was MURTHY by name. She gave birth to the divine twins - - NARA and NARAYANA. These twin brothers were the forms of the Lord and they were always together.

The Compassion of Lord Shiva

Sri Sridhara Venkatesa Ayyaval

Sri Sridhara Ayyaval used to visit the Temple of MahaLinga, Lord Shiva, in the nearby city of Madhyarjuna. Rain or shine, he would not miss visiting the temple. He preferred to see the Lord when there was not much crowd and so chose the early hours of the morning for the visit.

Once, Lord Shiva intended to test the love and devotion of Sri Sridhara Ayyaval. That day, Sri Sridhara Ayyaval was on his way to the temple as usual. He had to cross the river Kaveri in order to reach the temple. On reaching the banks of Kaveri he found the river flooded. Boatmen refused to ferry the boat across the river. Sri Sridhara Ayyaval could not bring himself to return home without seeing His Lord in the temple. Gazing at the tower of the temple on the other shore, Sri Sridhara Ayyaval stood with tear-filled eyes. He felt he must have offended the Lord in some way and that sin acted as a block to the darshan of His Lord. He composed a soulful prayer called 'AarthiHara Stotra' in which he prayed, "Oh Lord! Please bestow your loving and compassionate glance on me, who is suffering from the pangs of separation from you! You have the untarnished fame of relieving the one who merely chants your Divine name from the clutches of sorrow! How is it that though I have sought refuge in You, I am agonized? Did you not bestow your grace on the hunter who, on death bed, chanted your divine name 'Hara Hara Hara' unintentionally, while teaching his son the way to hunt-'Prahara, Aahara, Samhara'(attack, bring, kill)? Such being your compassion, how can you turn your face away from me who am piteously praying- 'Save me Lord Shiva!'

While Sri Sridhara Ayyaval was lamenting thus a priest of the Shiva Temple, who was known to him, came to him and gave Vibhoothi Prasada (Sacred ashes). He said to Sri Sridhara Ayyaval, "I did not find you in the temple today. Knowying that you would be saddened at not being able to cross the river and have the vision of the Lord I decided to come and give you the sacred ashes." Transported to Bliss Sri Sridhara Ayyaval prostrated before the priest and accepted the sacred ashes with reverence.

While Sri Sridhara Ayyaval moved towards his home, shedding tears of joy thinking of the love of the Lord towards His devotees, the question 'how did the priest manage to cross the flooded river?' arose in him. From his memory he recalled that the priest was not a bit wet and the sacred ashes smeared on his body were not sumdged! Sri Sridhara Ayyaval wondered if it was Lord Shiva himself who had come in the garb of the priest. Next day, the flood subsided and Sri Sridhara Ayyaval went to the temple and found the same priest there. Sri Sridhara Ayyaval thanked the priest for his kindness and said that his mind was at peace only after receiving the sacred ashes from him the previous day. The priest was utterly confused hearing this. He said, "Sir! I never came to the other shore! Indeed, who could have dared to cross the flooding river?"

On hearing this, Sri Sridhara Ayyaval was moved beyond words. He realized it was Lord Shiva himself who had taken pity on him and come to give the sacred ashes. With a grateful heart he sang the glory of the compassion of the Lord in the hymn 'Dayashatakam'. In this hymn, he sings, "Oh! The Compassion of the Lord! One is cleansed of all his sins the moment you cast your glance on him! When will you bless me so that I will always be immersed in the bliss of chanting the Divine names like 'Madhava', 'Murari', 'Kaamaarey', 'Shiva', 'Mahadeva', 'Govinda' and 'Purahara'! Be pleased to bestow two boons on me! That my mind may always be established in the Divine Form of Lord Shiva and that my tongue may always chant the Divine Names! In my last breath, let me chant the Divine Name 'Shiva'!"

Sri Sridhara Ayyaval, who composed 100 such verses glorifying the compassion of the Lord, was none other than Lord Shiva himself! Needless to say, he was an epitome of compassion! He could not bear to see anyone suffer. He considered even liberation a trifling matter as compared to compassion to all beings.

One day, while Sri Sridhara Ayyaval was on his way to visit the temple of Lord Shiva, he discoursed to his devotees emphasizing the glory of divine names and love for the Lord. Sri Sridhara Ayyaval looked unusually bright and lustrous that day. In the sanctum sanctorum of the Lord, with tears in his eyes, he prayed to the Lord through many verses. Overwhelmed by the pangs of separation from the Lord and unable to stand it any longer, Sri Sridhara Ayyaval rushed to the Sanctum of the Lord in order to embrace Him. While the priests attempted to stop him Sri Sridhara Ayyaval ran and disappeared into the Sanctum of the Lord. The Lord, in the form of Linga, shone brightly like a sun for some time. The awestruck devotees stood looking on, as this wonderful incident happened, and shed tears.

The story of Iyppasi Annabhishekam

Annabhishekam is held on full moon day in the seventh month of every year - i.e. Iyppasi (Tamil calendar) Asvini (Hindu calendar) (October/November), for Shivalingam, presiding deity of all Shiva Temples in South India. Devotees believe that performing annabhishekam to the Lord on this day would rid them of all their problems.

During this period, Prajapati Kardama whowas born from Brahma's own shadow, worshipped Lord Narayana for ten thousand years. He was eager to take up the work of 'creation' of the species, as instructed by Lord Brahma.Lord Narayana appeared before Kardama in theform contemplated upon by him, seated on the divine Garuda. The Lord blessed him to marryDEVAHUTI, daughter of Manu.He also blessed him to beget nine daughters. The Lord Himself would thereafter,be born to him as a son as the tenth childunder the name of KAPILA.Thereafter, the Lord promised "Moksha" to Kardama.

20 (Abhirami Andhadhi - Verse 20)

Abhirami! You are ever omnipresent, perfect and auspicious. Is your temple (abode) the left- half of my father Shiva?, or is it the final truth of the Vedas or is your abode the white-moon full of Ambrosia. Is your abode the heart of this simpleton in me ?or is it the sacred-milk sea? Would you condescend to tell me which your favourite abode is ?

Greatness of Ambal

Although these are of the same tathvam (principle), more than Shiva, to Ambal (Shakti) is the greatness; this, Adi Shankara Bhagavadhpadhal explains in his 'Soundaryalahari' sthothram.

Never Insult Brahmanas

pārpār novana ceyyār (பார்ப்பர் நோவன செய்யார்)

An interesting episode is mentioned in Puram poem 43. Mavalattān a prince of the Chola family, younger brother of Nalam Killi was playing dice with the Brahmin poet, Dāmappal kannanār. The former lost the game and in anger threw the dice on the victorious Brahmana. The poem describes this situation. The poet refers to important Vedic traditions. One. There was belief that a group of Brahman Rishis were following the hot sun to prevent the excessive heat of the sun on earth, so that the world may be saved. These rishis were called Vālakhilyas who were circling the earth along with the sun constantly. This is a Vedic lore. The poet of the Puranānūru refers to these sages who have sacrificed everything for the sake of the world and live only by air as their food. Having said that the poet says that your ancestors (Cholas) will never insult the Brahmanas which you have done now. It shows in ancient Tamilnad, Brahmins were highly respected and will not be insulted even by the ruling kings. Obviously because of their sacrifices for humanity , bearing the unbearable heat of sun for the people of the world. But the poet goes beyond what he said initially. As the poem seems to record an interesting episode which obviously is not a fiction but history we may see the poem itself.

Narayaneeyam - Dasakam: 12 (Varaaha Avatara)

VARAAHA AVATARA - THE BOAR INCARNATION

Two asuras were born to Kasyapa and Diti - Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakasipu. HIRANYAKSHA from his birth he was thirsting for battle. Not finding anyone equal to him in strength,he hit upon a plan to attract the attention of the Lord, the sworn enemy of the Asuras. He removed the earth from its orbit and submerged it. The earth is mythologically represented as Mother Earth - Bhoomi Devi, who is married to Lord Narayana. The Asura then roamed about menacingly across the waterswielding his mace. He heard from God Varuna, the God of Waters, that Vishnu was the only match for him.Bhoomi Devi being the dear wife of the Lord, the Asura expected that a fight with the Lord was imminent.

17 (Abhirami Andhadhi - Verse 17)

SETTLING GOOD ALLIANCE FOR VIRGIN GIRLS

Goddess Abhirami's physical form is quite marvelous. She is like a beautiful, slim creeper with enticing face and she is with many victories to her credit. She is the successful Goddess in getting the left half of our Lord Shiva, who once with his fore-head- eye, smashed the ego and pride of Manmadha, the consort of Rathi!

16 (Abhirami Andhadhi - Verse 16)

TO OBTAIN CHRONOVISION (The ability to see the past, present, and future)

Kiliye, kilainyar manaththe kidandhu kilarndhu olirum
oliye, olirum olikku idame, ennil onrum illaa
veliye, veli mudhal poodhangal aagi virindha amme!-
aliyen arivu alavirku alavaanadhu adhisayame.

Mother Abhirami! Like a parrot you speak beautiful language. You remain as concentration and enlightenment of the minds of your devotees who are your kith and kin. You are the source of light that brightens the world. On deeper scrutiny , it is clear that you are incomparable with your vast cosmos where there is nothing. All the same, it is quite amazing that I am able to realize you with my little knowledge.
