வாவி யெல்லாம் தீர்த்தம் 

மணல் எல்லாம் வெண்ணீறு

காவணங்களெல்லாம் கணநாதர் 

பூவுலகில் ஈது சிவலோகம் என்றென்றே 

மெய்த்தவத்தோர் ஓதும் திருவொற்றி ஊர்.

- பட்டினத்தடிகள்

பொருள்: மெய்யான தவம் புரிந்த புனிதர்கள் எல்லோரும் போற்றுகின்ற திருத்தலமாம் திருவொற்றியூரில் அமைந்துள்ள நீர்நிலைகள் அனைத்துமே சிவ புண்ணிய தீர்த்தங்களாம்; அந்நகர் எங்கும் பரவிக் கிடக்கும் மணல் யாவும் அவன் அணியும் திருநீறு; மலர்கள் பூத்துக் குலுங்கும் நந்தவனங்கள் அனைத்துமே சிவகணங்களாகும்.

பிரளயத்திற்குப் பின் தோன்றிய முதல் சுயம்பு சிவலிங்கம் ஆனதால் இத்தல இறைவன் ஆதிபுரீஸ்வரர் என்றும், வாசுகி என்ற பாம்பிற்கு அருள் புரிய புற்று வடிவில் எழுந்தருளி தன்னுள் அடக்கிக் கொண்டதால் படம்பக்கநாதர் என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்.

புற்று மண்ணால் ஆன இந்த லிங்கத் திருமேனி வருடத்தில் 3 நாட்களைத் தவிர மற்ற நாட்களில் லிங்கம் பெட்டி போன்ற அமைப்பில் கவசம் சார்த்தப்பட்டு மூடியே இருக்கும். ஒவ்வொரு வருடமும் கார்த்திகை மாத பெளர்ணமி நாளில் கவசம் திறக்கப்படும். பெளர்ணமியன்று மாலையில் இறைவனுக்கு புனுகு மற்றும் சாம்பிராணி தைலத்தால் அபிஷேகம் செய்கிறார்கள். தொடர்ந்து 3 நாட்களுக்கு இறைவனுக்கு சிறப்பு பூஜைகள் நடத்தப்படும். மூன்றாம் நாள் இரவில் மீண்டும் சுவாமிக்கு கவசம் சாத்தி விடுவர். இந்த 3 நாட்களில் இறைவனை புற்று வடிவமாகக் கண்டு தரிசிக்க ஏராளமான பக்தர்கள் வருகின்றனர். இறைவன் இங்கு தீண்டா திருமேனியனாகக் காட்சி தருவதால், இவருக்கு அபிஷேகம் செய்யப்படுவதில்லை. ஆவுடையாருக்கு மட்டும் அபிஷேகம் செய்கின்றனர்.

A song of the great Siddha Pattinathar (who attained jeeva samadhi and became a Shivalinga at the seashore near this temple) goes like this:

In Thiruvottriyur,

All water bodies are Thirthams, 

Dust is the Sacred Ash, 

Flowers in the garden are Shiva Ghanas and 

It is Shivaloka on earth, 

so praise those who do true penance. 

A new world comes into being after every pralaya flood. During one such pralaya, Brahmma wanted to prevent the destruction of the world and performed a Yajna dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Agni-fire and became a Linga as prayed by Brahmma. The Yaga Kunda – the pit, became a temple. As Lord Shiva dried the flood water-Ottral in Tamil, the place came to known as Tiruvottriyur. Lord Shiva being the first-Aadhi- to appear here, He is praised as Aadhi Pureeswarar.

The temple is one among the Saptha Vidanga Sthalas. Serprent Vasuki performed penance in this place as advised by sage Upamanyu. Lord blessed Vasuki in the form of an anthill. Vasuki merged with Lord. Lord came to be praised as Padampakka Nathar. There is box-like cover (kavacham) above the Lord. He cannot be touched and hence no abishek to Lord but to Avudayar the base peeta only. Even the priests do not touch the Lord – Theenda Thirumeniyar- Lord untouched by human. 

Lord Padampakka Nathar is ever under cover and can be seen plain only for three days following Karthikai Pournami-full moon day in November-December for Thaila Kappu purpose-oil application on the body using civet musk and Frankincense oil. He will be covered again on the night of the third day. It is said that Lords Vishnu, Brahmma and Vasuki are worshipping Lord during these three days. Devotees visit in very large numbers to have darshan of special poojas performed during this period.
